According to the Holi puja Vidhi, a few essential items are required such as:

  • Cow dung cakes and small logs to signify Holika
  • Vermilion or Roli
  • Rice grains
  • Turmeric
  • Coconut
  • Flowers
  • Betel leaves
  • Sweets
  • A kalash full of water
  • Raw cotton threads

Traditionally, there are basically five Holi pooja steps to follow.

Set up the right spot for Holka Dahan. Clean the space and create a model of Holika. You may draw a rangoli in this spot.

Before lighting the fire, offer Kumkum or vermilion, turmeric, and water. Also, purify the surroundings by chanting mantras for Holika pujan.

Set Holika on fire. Start chanting mantras. This will protect you from negative energy. Tie cotton thread around the fire by moving in circles at least three or a maximum of seven times.

Offer grains, sweets, coconut, and other things to the fire and seek blessings from the divine for happiness and prosperity for the future.

When the fire is out, rub the Vibhuti or ash on your forehead and seek divine protection. Distribute the prasad to family and friends and share well-wishes with family and friends.

On the next day, celebrate the arrival of spring with colors. Start the day by offering prayers and worshipping Lord Krishna. Visit the nearby temple and shower colors and flowers on the Lord to seek blessings for a positive beginning. Women typically sing bhajans and devotional songs as well to praise the lord and remember the playful acts between Radha and Krishna on Holi day.

Finally, the Holi celebration starts with loud beats of the drums or Dhols, traditional songs and dance performances. People shower colors at others and in the air to show their faith in the divine and their joy for a new beginning.
